Updated 28 October 2026 · By the Bhasika team
Free tuition at public universities, strong degrees, and an 18-month permit to find work after graduating. Germany is the best-value study destination for Nepali students, if you plan for it properly. Here is everything you need, from costs and requirements to the visa in Kathmandu.
Why Nepali students choose Germany
- No tuition at most public universities, including for students from Nepal.
- Strong degrees in engineering, computer science, data science, business and natural sciences.
- Part-time work of up to 140 full days or 280 half days per year while you study.
- An 18-month job-seeker permit after graduation to find work in your field.
The trade-off: you plan earlier, you prove your funds up front, and learning German makes everything easier, from part-time jobs to your career after graduation.
How much it costs to study in Germany from Nepal
| Cost | Amount (2026) |
|---|---|
| Tuition at most public universities | €0 (Baden-Württemberg: €1,500 per semester for non-EU students) |
| Semester contribution | About €150–€350 per semester, often including a public transport ticket |
| Proof of funds (blocked account) | €11,904 per year, released at €992 per month |
| Health insurance | Mandatory; public student insurance is a fixed monthly amount |
| uni-assist application | €75 for the first university, €30 for each additional one in the same semester |
| German national visa fee | €75, paid in NPR in cash at the embassy |
Convert euro amounts at the current Nepal Rastra Bank rate when you plan, and keep a buffer: the rupee moves, and the blocked account must be funded in full before your visa appointment.
Admission requirements
Bachelor's: a Nepali +2 certificate is usually not enough for direct admission to a German bachelor's. Most students either complete one or two years of a bachelor's in Nepal first or attend a Studienkolleg (foundation course) in Germany. Check your exact case in the DAAD admission database.
Master's: a recognised bachelor's degree in a related subject, a good GPA, and the course's language requirement. Many English-taught master's programmes ask for IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.
Language: German-taught programmes usually need B2–C1 (TestDaF, DSH, Goethe or telc). Even for English-taught programmes, some A1–B1 German is a big help.
APS certificate: the German Embassy in Kathmandu lists APS verification for Chinese and Indian degrees. Rules for applicants with Nepali certificates have been reported differently by different sources, so confirm with the embassy and your university before you apply.
Choosing a public university
Start from the course, then compare universities on language of teaching, deadlines, location and cost of living. Cities like Munich and Frankfurt cost much more to live in than Leipzig or Chemnitz. How to apply, step by step
- Shortlist 4–8 programmes and note each deadline and language requirement.
- Take IELTS or a German test, and prepare a CV and motivation letter for each course.
- Get your academic documents certified, and check whether APS applies to you.
- Apply directly on the university portal or through uni-assist, as the course specifies.
- Accept your admission, open and fund a blocked account, and arrange health insurance.
- Apply for the German national (student) visa.
Intakes and deadlines
Germany has two intakes. The winter semester starts in October, with many deadlines around 15 July, and the summer semester starts in April, with deadlines around 15 January. Many universities set earlier deadlines for international applicants, so start 8–12 months ahead and treat the university's own page as final.
German student visa from Nepal
You apply for the national visa through the Federal Foreign Office's Consular Services Portal, then attend an appointment at the German Embassy in Kathmandu with your original documents and biometrics. Typical documents include:
- Passport valid for at least 12 months, and photos
- Admission letter from the German university
- Academic certificates and transcripts
- Language certificate (it must be submitted with the application)
- Proof of finances, usually a blocked account
- Health insurance and a motivation letter
The fee is €75, paid in Nepali rupees in cash. The embassy states a minimum processing time of about 3–4 weeks, and it is often longer before intakes, so apply as soon as you have your admission.
